Elsie Arisa

Elsie Arisa is a refreshingly direct, deeply experienced, and wildly engaging voice in the world of legal careers. A licensed attorney and proud graduate of a Top 20 law school, Elsie brings over a decade of real-world insight from the frontlines of Big Law recruiting and professional development.

Currently serving as the Director of Legal Recruitment & Professional Development at a top California law firm, she’s reviewed thousands of resumes, coached hundreds of law students, and helped shape hiring decisions at the highest levels. Her advice is built from years of sitting in decision-making rooms and mentoring students who actually get hired.

Before stepping into leadership roles, Elsie walked the same path: surviving law school, navigating OCI stress, and converting interviews into offers. Now, she helps others do the same with fewer headaches and more confidence.

When she’s not advising the next generation of attorneys, Elsie thrives as a producer and storyteller, combining her legal mind with her creative heart. As a member of the Television Academy, she’s passionate about telling stories that matter on screen and on the page.

This book is a no-fluff, results-driven guide with humor, empathy, and hard-earned truth, perfect for law students who want to crush OCI without losing their minds (or their personality).

Big Law Energy

Written by Elsie Arisa, a seasoned attorney, top 20 law school grad, and current Director of Legal Recruiting & Professional Development (a.k.a. the person behind the curtain deciding who gets an offer and who gets ghosted), this guide takes you behind the scenes of Big Law hiring with brutal honesty, actionable tips, and just enough humor to keep you from crying into your casebooks.

From resume real talk and how to not bomb your screener, to surviving callback chaos, picking the right firm, and dodging recruiter red flags,
Big Law Energy walks you through the whole OCI process like a wise (and slightly over-caffeinated) big sibling.

FAQ

Got Questions?

Here are answers to the most common ones. Still curious? Reach out below.

Is this book only for students interested in Big Law?
While the book is focused on Big Law recruiting and OCI specifically, many of the interview strategies, networking tips, and professional development insights apply broadly to any legal job search. That said, if Big Law isn’t your goal, some sections will be less relevant.
What if my GPA isn't great?
Good news: there’s an entire section dedicated to this. GPA matters, but it’s not everything. The book covers how to maximize other parts of your application, how to tell your story effectively, and how to target firms where you’ll have a real shot. Many successful Big Law attorneys didn’t have perfect grades.

When should I read this book?
Ideally, start during your 1L spring semester before OCI begins. However, the book is still valuable right up until your interviews. Even if you’re in the middle of OCI season, the interview prep and callback sections will help you perform better.

Does this replace career services advice?
Think of this as a supplement, not a replacement. Career services can help with resume formatting and mock interviews, but they’re not typically former Big Law recruiters with insider knowledge of what actually happens in hiring committee meetings. This book fills that gap.

Is the audiobook the same as the paperback?
Yes! The audiobook is the full, unabridged version narrated by Elsie herself. Many readers prefer it for commutes or gym sessions. Some even do both—listen first, then use the paperback as a reference.

Can I reach out to Elsie with questions?
Absolutely! While Elsie can’t provide individual career counseling to everyone, she loves hearing from readers. You can reach out through the contact form on this page or connect on social media.
